The root chakra is at the base of the chakra system and lays the foundation for expansion in your life. The root chakra allows you to harness courage, resourcefulness and the will to live during challenging times. It helps us to feel safe and grounded. It’s the force behind decisions and actions. This chakra has the biggest impact on physical health. 

Location

The root chakra is at the base of the spine near the tailbone and it extends up to just below the navel.

How an Unbalanced Root Chakra Manifests in the Body

Physical problems include bladder and digestive issues, constipation, diarrhea, lower back, hip pain, sciatica, varicose veins, pelvic/groin/rectum problems, impotence, water retention, and problems with legs, knees, calves, ankles, and feet.

Signs of an Overactive Root Chakra

It can cause a person to be controlling, overly critical, stubborn, angry, aggressive, and judgemental. 

Signs of an Underactive Root Chakra

A person can feel fear, anxiety, worry, anger/rage, overthinking, inability to focus, fear of abandonment, depression, nightmares, and feel emotionally disconnected.

How to Balance the Root Chakra

Sit in a quiet place or do this while doing the yoga poses listed below. Close your eyes, take in a few deep breaths and envision a red glowing wheel or lotus flower spinning at the base of your spine.  Chant “I live” and draw forth the root energy until a red wheel of energy appears in your mind’s eye. Chant the Bija Mantra below. Imagine this red wheel is circulating in a strong clear manner at the base of the spine. Imagine this wheel transforming into a glowing red lotus flower, blooming, and growing larger.
